In the 2011 season as a true freshman, Smith appeared in 8 games, recording a forced fumble in a 31-3 win over Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl. Preston appeared in all 13 games and led the Bulldogs with 4.5 sacks in 2012. Preston recorded 2.5 sacks, including 2.0 in a 59–26 loss to LSU as a junior in 2013.
Preston earned Southeastern Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week honors in each of the first three weeks after starting the 2014 season with a bang. Preston was projected by NFL Draft Scout and CBS as a fourth-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft at the end of his senior season.
In the 2015 NFL Draft, Preston was selected by the Washington Redskins in the second round with the 38th overall pick. In 2015 Smith was the seventh defensive end in the draft.
